What’s the 411? (About Teen 411)

Wassup? So what is the Teen 411?  The Teen 411 project is a website created to help you learn about local resources available in Alameda County and help you find answers to questions that affect your everyday life.

Youth were front and center in the design of this website. Hijos del Sol, a local teen leadership group in Hayward, helped get input from teens all over Alameda County. They also coordinated an art contest for the logo and other artwork which you now see on this website. This project is for and about teens and it can only fly with your input.  If you have any suggestions about making this website better, please click on the feedback link. The website is in its earliest stages so if you find any mistakes, please let us know so that we can fix them and make this an even better resource for you.

How We Came to Be (History)

The idea for the Website was originally conceived in the fall of 2002 when the Contra Costa County Office of Education (Guides4Youth) provided grant money for disseminating information about local resources for youth ages 14-21. Additional funding was obtained from the Alameda County Workforce Investment Board, who had developed a similar idea to establish an Alameda County website to aid our youth. We would like to thank these two funding sources who joined forces in providing the generous support that enabled us to expand the Teen 411 website to its current form.

Youth Voice (Youth Participation)

The staff of the Alameda Office of Education developed this website with input from youth groups throughout Alameda County. From the beginning, it was our belief that youth participation should play a strong and essential role in the design of any website created for teens. Feedback about the initial live version was facilitated by Hijos del Sol, a local teen leadership group working within the La Familia Counseling Service. Hijos del Sol coordinated a contest to solicit logo and artwork entries for the Teen 411 Project, all of which appear on this website in the Art Gallery and from which the logo was designed.  They also facilitated local teen focus groups which were used to gather information about the appeal and ease of use of the website, and the relevance of the resources to teens in their every day lives. Youth voice and participation is a serious commitment we have made to this project and we welcome suggestions for making the website better.
